- LEED Project Management (ID+C v3 Gold)
Location: Fremont, CA
Area: 403,850 square feet
Building Type: Laboratory, Manufacturing Facility
The Seagate Media Research Center 2 is a large, complex laboratory, manufacturing facility, and commercial project located in Fremont, CA. The space houses more than 500 full-time employees.
The project team used highly-efficient fixtures to achieve a potable water reduction of 56%. Occupancy sensors, optimized HVAC systems, and ENERGY STAR appliances reduced energy demand (99% of appliances installed across the project were ENERGY STAR rated), while enhanced commissioning and measurement and verification helped to ensure that energy use will remain low for years to come.
Materials selection and disposal was a key component of onsite sustainability; indeed, 77% of onsite-generated construction waste was diverted from landfills, 15% of the total building materials (by value) were manufactured using recyclable materials, and 94% of wood-based materials used were FSC Certified. Reducing the total amount of virgin materials used and waste generated was important to the project team and reflects an overarching reduction in environmental impact.
Environmental quality was protected during construction, pre-occupancy, and during occupancy through low-emitting adhesives and sealants, paints and coatings, flooring systems, and systems furniture and seating. The building was also designed to maximize thermal comfort. Bicycle storage and changing rooms are provided onsite to incentivize alternative modes of transit.
